Over the past several decades, a vast abundance of opportunities within the field of computer science has risen as our world has technologically advanced. A career in technology has become desired by much of today's youth, yet still there lies a great majority of this population who have not been exposed to the opportunities that are out there for them.
To take part in spreading awareness, the University of Iowa's WiCS organization held an outreach event where president, Janhavi Bodkhe, spoke with a local group of Girl Scouts. The event consisted of explaining to the girls what exactly computer science is and how technology solves real-world problems, some of which some of them may have experienced before. Questions like "Do computer scientists design games?" and "Do computer scientists have anything to do with Alexa or TVs?" arose during the talk. A game the girls got to play was one where one person acted as a robot and another acted as a programmer and the programmer gave the robot an algorithm to follow to perform tasks such as drawing a circle or triangle. The Girl Scouts were even exposed to real code snippets and helped find bugs within the code like missing semicolons or brackets.
Although the girls only got to dip their toes in the pond that is the field of computer science, the intent of the event was to expose them to a technology-related field and (hopefully) spark their interest in it as well!
